I've just about had it with the CB!!!!!!
I used to bitch about folks who don't run with their radio on.

Last week me a and a guy named "Big Dog" in a W-9 rooster cruiser were stepping west on I-30 in AR. It was after midnight and it all started in west Memphis and lasted to the TX border. This @#$% ^&&% in a MTI skate board was screaming at folks bitching about everything usin the N word talkin bad to a lady and being rude all the way. This guy was a fruit cake!!!!!! We finally figured out who it was and confronted him all he wanted to do was hit the shoulder and throw down. While he was being an idiot on the radio the other guy was recording him.

The next day his safety office got to hear the recording... I'm thinking he might not be employed by MTI anymore!

The next day say stuff different idiot... but this guy was pretty smart instead of getting back at me for calling him out in person he called my safety department and told them I was driving recklessly.... I get a call from safety I told them I was driving normal as I always do. Amazingly I couldn't reach the guy on the radio anymore...

It never ends!!! Any body wanna buy a Ranger 2970 cheap!!!

There are still some good folks out there!!!
I've been run'in from Ohio to Southern Cal alot and I keep run'in into some good drivers who still know what a CB radio is and how to use it.

A few days ago I was step-pin east thru Joplin headin home. I ran into a guy named "Talk-a-lot" he was in a black T-6. We ran nonstop to the Ohio border. I laughed all the way the guy was funny as hell! Great conversation and jokes all the way across.

It's rare now days to get any one to use the radio, let alone good conversation!!! Most folks ride down the road with the CB off. The only time it comes on is to bitch about a backup....

DOT kinda day...
I'm steppin across I-40 almost to Winslow, AZ runnin the front door for a black Pete and a few others. The posted rate of fuel consumption was 75. I had the cruise set around there. I notice I am approaching a white crown vic in front of me. I of course give a shout to the folks behind me and let them know what we are gaining on. The AZ DOT moved to the granny lane and slowed down. I stepped left and pass him slowly. Once I get back in the granny lane he lights me up. I'm thinking WHY? I pull off on a get off ramp. We stop and he let's me know that my air lines on the wagon are dragging the ground.

None of the steering wheel holders that I passed could say anything! That's when it went south... He asked for my license, registration, bill's of lading, health card, my log book and much to my surprise he asked me for all of my fuel receipts and toll receipts. I've been driving since 1992 and have never been asked for receipts! The logs looked great by them selves but when he started matching the toll receipts etc.......

Here is the bad part. I carry self addressed big envelopes so I can mail all my logs, bill's of lading and receipts to the house. I sat all week end waiting to deliver Monday morning in Flag. I should have mailed my stuff!!!!

I'm sitting at a truck stop out of service as I type this. Fortunately the officer was a nice guy and did not issue me any citations. But the report goes against the company I am leased to.

The moral of the story ALWAYS BE PREPARED!!!!! When your going down the road and ya think to your self, "Na I'll take care of it latter!" Latter might be to late!!!

AND!!!! When your going down the road and ya see that a truck has a problem grab that microphone and tell the driver about his problem...... Maybe someone will help you out some day and avoid a lot of BS!

It can happen any where at any time.......
I'm backed into a dock at PGW in Denver (windshield installer warehouse). I'm on the dock watching the lift driver unload glass racks. I go back out to my truck to wait while he finishes. This guy knocks on my right door and says, "One of my drivers hit your truck!" I fly out of my cab to see the following damage. He said his driver went inside to get his paper work. He was driving a 1 ton Ford van. Guess it wasn't all the way in park! His insurance says they will pay for the repair and down time... I'll believe it when I have the check in my hand......

The van driver getting a ticket from Denver PD for "Reckless Driving!"

I did get a check from their insurance then I went and got a few parts from the Boyz at 4 State. The final fix...

Truck Stops.....
Truck Stops….. Where did they go?

Remember when….. Good food, good friends and meet new folks. You pulled in they pumped your fuel and cleaned your glass. Nice waitresses. People were nice to each other.

Now you need an armored vehicle to get across the parking lot without being hit by someone doing 40 mph.

Now they are called travel plazas – travel centers. No matter what they are called, us truck drivers just fell by the wayside! They cater to those nasty little things that are always trying to cause wrecks…….

So let’s talk about driver reward cards. The more fuel you put in those tanks the more points you get. That’s cool. Let’s start with T/A. You accumulate points on the card you go to buy something in their store that costs $7.98. You go to the counter to use your card to pay and….. you get told you have to use the machine to get a coupon. OK you go to the machine and low and behold you can only get increments of $10 coupons from the machine. Cool. Back to the till you hand them your coupon and they ring up your $7.98 item and give you no chance. Excuse me what about the difference you ask! The answer is sorry bout your luck!

Fling J. I stopped at the J in Denver, CO yesterday. I put 140 gallons in the tanks found a parking spot and went inside. I saw they had put a Denny’s restaurant in. I asked the lady if I could use my point’s card in Denny’s. I think you already know what I was told. NO! So I nicely ask how am I supposed to get a meal on my card? I was told you can get pizza with the card but only at Flying J’s with a Denny’s or I can use my points at the on line store. I asked for a shower off of my card and took a shower. I came back to the counter and put two pieces of pizza on my card. It took a $5 coupon and I had to pay 43cents on top of that. I carry my pizza to the far side of the parking lot. I open it up and take a bite of the burnt cardboard tasting slice. I then drove to the fuel island and went back inside and asked for my points back…. “Sorry I can’t do that!” Ok then let me speak to the manager…. Her answer.. “I am the manager!” I just walked away….

So on life goes. The rates go down. DOT get’s to flexing their little dot muscles, CSA 2010….. yea. Steering wheel holders keep trying to run over you…. Life goes on…….

Selection on the Flying J buffet in Albuquerque 6/12/2010 @ 18:00

I chose to order off the menu... $12 for flat iron steak and sweet tea... was pretty good and tender!

BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR!
Hello fans, Sunshine here.

Three years ago, July 4th weekend, I decided to go on a road trip with my husband, aka Stepper. He was going to Washington state. Although I used to drive back in the early 80’s I never went that far north…sounded exciting…so why not! Our trip was uneventful, if that is possible in a truckers life, all the way to Washington. Already by then my butt is numb and I’ve read two books. I need a little excitement and new scenery! Made the delivery on time and proceeded to pick up a load of grass seed. Down US-12 we go. That was scenic! Lets take a shortcut and cut off a few miles on state route 126. Nice wide road, settle in for another scenic road. About two miles down the road the pavement ends and we see a sign that says through traffic not advised! Okay now what…no where to turn this 53 footer around. Oh well its still pretty wide…proceed forward. Another mile down the road and we see a yellow sign. Both of us at the same time read: Steep Grade Sharp Curves and Loose Gravel. OMG! There’s definitely steep grade, straight up and straight down…on gravel, no guard rails as I’m looking over the edge of the cliff. I’m watching the trailer at a 45 degree angle follow us around the sharp curves! Finally to the bottom, thanks to Steppers great driving and expertise. But it goes back up the other side! Were at a crossroad. As we sit there contemplating whether to go up the other side or turn, a farmer stops by with a dumbfounded look on his face that he couldn’t believe we just came down that mountain! Thank God he did come by because he said we would have never made it up the other side…rock overhangs that he wouldn’t take his horse trailer through. Ok, enough scenery, turn left and end up right back on the road we were on before the shortcut. At this point I just want to go home…I’ve had enough excitement. Way out in BFE, up and down, around and around…finally arrived at the customer. We’re both finally calming down and checking our underwear when we find some more beautiful scenery…76 miles of mountain on one side and a raging river on the other, my side! With no guard rails, no shoulder and 90 degree curves! Geez what next? My nerves can’t take any more! Top it all off, it’s raining! Wonder why we haven’t seen another big truck? Oh here comes one…”Driver, its getting slick on the mountain!”. OMG! We look at each other and say, “What mountain?” The one we started to climb in the rain…at least were away from the river. I don’t have to worry about sliding into it anymore. Up and up we go, still raining. This isn’t so bad…until the baseball size snowflakes start falling! Lolo Pass is the name. Everything gets thrown off the dash because the windows start fogging quickly and the snow is piling up. We come up on a sign with yellow flashing lights. “CHAIN UP!” This is July…What the hell? By the time we got to the top of the mountain there was about a foot of snow on the ground, and we still have to go down the other side with our 44,000 pounds of grass seed. It definitely took a lot longer to get down than it did to get up…Finally to the bottom and neither one of us wanted to go any farther. We hit the first truck stop and went to bed. The next morning we had a perfect view of the mountain we just came down…nice and white. That was the most unbelievable day I have ever had in my life….

One thing to remember: BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR!

Steppin tip: Always be ready for anything! Trip planning helps........oppps

Me, Me, Me - ME
Sounds like an opera singer warming up don’t it?

This seems to be the attitude of many people everywhere ya go. Everyone from your kids to your fellow truck drivers… which makes them steering wheel holders. You see it every day all day and night long. Just when you think everyone is that way another real truck driver shows you some courtesy and you start to think, “Well there are some good folks out here still!” Annnnnd we aren’t going anywhere. We’ll still be the one who invites you back over and then we don’t get a thank you of any sort. But we still keep on being nice. We’re the ones who pull forward when we done fueling. We’re the ones who hold short and let the other guy pull out of the truck stop giving him plenty of room. We’re the ones who go down the road with the radio on so we can hear the folks talking about backups and such other important things. We’re the ones who pull over to see if a driver needs help. We’re the ones who always use the turn signals. We’re the ones who have the common sense not to tailgate. We’re the ones who take our good sweet time when in a truck stop, not grabbing gears and crackin’ those jakes as they round the corner in front of the party row at 40 miles an hour! All though it was a pleasurable experience watching a guy do that at the TA on 24 south of crashville as he turned to sharp and ripped the back doors and the door frame of a refer. It was really good when the driver of the truck he hit, well I’ll say got physical. Then speed racer left in a meat wagon and the other guy went to… ahhh jail! But it did make for real good entertainment!

Each and every one of us can make a difference by doing what we know is the right things to do. I know it’s really hard to do but we can’t let them win! I should know, my handle use to be “ROADRAGE!” Thank goodness a couple of large cars gave me my new handle when I removed their doors from their trucks one night…. Hence the handle “STEPPER!” Woop Whoop!!!!!

Steppin tip: Computer generated logs are allowed, I’ve had DOT on my porch 6 times lookin at my coloring book. So much easier then page removal …etc….

Truck stop etiquette
Long days and long nights. When it’s finally time to call it quits and you head for a place to land. It’s is so much easier if you enter the parking lot without the attitude. As you enter the first thing you do is? If you can - lose the headlights. If ya can’t turn of the head lights at least turn off the high beams. When you are sitting waiting for the guy to back in for the fourth time be patient. If your sitting there with your lights on his truck or in his mirrors he can’t see as well. So turn them off it will go faster for everyone.

Truck stops aren’t race tracks! But you would think they are by watching some people fly around them. It’s called SAFETY. What if some ones child is running across the lot and you don’t see it? He shouldn’t have been there is not an excuse. Slow down and be safe..

When your done fueling pull forward. So many times you see it. They fuel and disappear for a long time blocking the island when you could be done fueling by the time their ready to leave. Plain laziness’! Or they just don’t care.

Trash you see them, the window goes down the piss bottle flies out the window as they leave. You call them out on the radio and the don’t know what your talking about.

Even the basics are going. You hold a door open for someone and they walk on by and say nothing.
The cure! Always be nice. It’s hard when your getting dumped on all day. Maybe just maybe it will wear off on one of them. Kill them with kindness.

Steppin tip : Remember if you are steppin or high steppin as a rule of thumb every now and then ya should step to the right look around then step back left. You will be amazed what you’ll see behind ya!

HIGH BEAMS!
High beams!

Cour-te-sy --
excellence of manners or social conduct; polite behavior.
a courteous, respectful, or considerate act or expression.

It's been a long night and I still have 3 hours to go. I pass a big truck and look in the mirror to see if it's clear to get back over.. and.. just as I look in the mirror, “HIGH BEAMS!” Do these folks actually think I’m not going look to see if I’m clear? Are they too lazy to turn off their head lights for a moment? Or is it the way they were taught? The proper way is to turn your head lights off then back on briefly. If they have day time running lights then use the same procedure. If for whatever reason they can’t be bothered to show a little courtesy then they shouldn’t do anything.

Fog lights.. AKA (you know what else there are called…)
Boy’s and girl’s driving with those lights pointing up in the air blinding everyone. If those folks need those extra lights to drive at night they shouldn’t be driving at night! At least they should get them adjusted. If anyone needs help with adjusting their lights e-mail me and I’ll talk you through it. Most trucks now days don’t even need tools you can do it with your fingers.

Steppin tip : When approaching a scale house with your pre-pass want a better chance at getting a green light? Get in the back of a pack of trucks…… When the coupe gets full usually the scale computer is set to bypass transponder equipped trucks.

Greetings!
High there my handle is Stepper. I met 4x4 on I-55 N in Missouri on day and we talked on the radio for some time about the way trucking is and the way it used to be. He invited me go to Highway Trucker.com and check out his website…. Well here I am on the staff!
I will be discussing many different topics in each post and I welcome all comments. I will not talk about politics or anything that could be rude to ANYONE! We are all big boys and girls….
Let me tell you about myself. I am 53 years old and have been around the block a few times as a matter of fact I have been around the world a few times. I retired from the US Air Force in 1992. I have well over 1 million safe miles in a big truck and I am an owner operator. I am leased to a company in Ohio. I drive my butt off every week. I have also been a safety manager for a trucking company with over 450 drivers in the past.
I used to DJ and KJ(karaoke jocky) for many years as a side line all over the world. I play bass guitar and do some singing. I have been in rock bands and country bands in my younger days.
The other half of the team is my wife she has several years driving experience driving a large car coast to coast. She is also the CFO(chief financial officer) for my business. Her handle is Sunshine. We are both computer techs.
So that’s a little about us in a nut shell.
